🧩 App Hack #1 – Use Collages for Better Multi-Angle Results
How to include more visual information in a single scan – without confusing the AI
Currently, the IsItGold? app allows the upload of only one image per scan. While this might seem like a limitation at first, it is a deliberate design decision to improve the accuracy of our results. Here's why:
- When multiple objects appear in a single image, the app’s AI may analyze features from different items, confusing the result.
- If an image shows multiple surfaces or materials (e.g., metal, plastic), it becomes difficult to determine which one to analyze.
- To maintain a focused and precise analysis, one image with one object or focal point provides the best results.
📸 But here's the Hack: Combine Views with Collages
If you want to show multiple perspectives of the same item, you can manually combine images into one single collage image before uploading it. This way, you can enrich the scan with additional visual data – as long as you follow these best practices:
✅ Best Practices for Creating Collages
- Only include images of the same object.
- Each view should display the same material (e.g., don’t mix images showing different metals or different pieces of jewelry).
- Keep the image resolution high and remove irrelevant content or backgrounds.
- Visually separate the images using borders, spacing, or frames – this helps the app’s machine vision system distinguish individual angles.
🧐 When is this useful?
- Jewelry with stamps: Show a wide view of the item and a close-up of the hallmark or karat marking.
- Minerals or Gold Ores: Since rocks often look different on each side, showing multiple surfaces improves identification.
- Damaged or worn objects: Show both worn and well-preserved sides for a better context.
🛠 How to Create a Multi-View Image
1. 🪞 Use a Mirror (Easy, No Software Needed)
Placing the item on or near a mirror surface will automatically reflect the back or underside. With clever camera positioning, you can show two sides of the same item in one photo. Using two mirrors at 90° angles can even show three surfaces simultaneously!
2. 🧑💻 Use Basic Image Editing Tools
Using software like Photoshop, GIMP, MS Paint, or any free collage app:
- Capture 2–4 images of the same object from different angles.
- Combine them into a single 1024×1024 (or higher) image.
- Add small borders or spacing between the images.
- Save as PNG or JPG and upload to the app.
⚠️ Important Note:
Be careful not to include unrelated items or different types of materials in the same image. The app may extract information from multiple parts and confuse the result. This is especially true for electronic scrap, watches, or multi-metal jewelry.
📌 Final Tip:
Keep experimenting! The IsItGold? AI gets better the more high-quality examples it processes. By helping the app see multiple sides of an object in a smart, controlled way, you’re boosting its training and future accuracy for everyone.
